People who put bricks in their toilet tank to save water and flick off all but essential lighting really mean well, but they don't accomplish much.

That's the upshot from a recent study by researchers from Columbia University, Ohio State University and Carnegie Mellon University who found that people are far more likely to focus on turning down the thermostat rather than investing in a more efficient heating system that would save far more energy over time.
