With the intention of expanding job training opportunities, President Trump signed an executive order that enables commencement of a process that will reduce the U.S. Department of Labor’s oversight of apprenticeship programs and federal job training programs.
Many details are yet to be worked out, but the order indicates the Administration intends to empower third parties to develop and oversee these programs as a way to accelerate training and employment of workers.
Initially, programs will need to be approved by the Department of Labor — and may also be terminated by the Department of Labor — if a statistical review indicates a program is ineffective. Third parties may include trade associations such as PHCC, trade unions, businesses and others.
Existing programs approved by the Department of Labor may continue operation and are encouraged to expand when possible.
As details of this executive order materialize, PHCC will monitor the activities and will strive to participate to the fullest extent possible to ensure that top-quality plumbing and HVAC training remains a baseline requirement for the future of our industry.
