Rebuilding Together, NAHB Help Rebuild Katrina-Damaged Home
Rebuilding Together New Orleans, the National Association
of Home Builders’ 50+ Housing Council and the Senior Lending Network worked
together to rebuild a home damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers
participated in a two-day community service project May 17-18 to help rebuild
the home of displaced mother-and-daughter owners Hazel Tate and Hilda Levy.
On May 18, the three groups hosted a media event featuring actor Robert Wagner, spokesperson for the Senior Lending Network, to meet the homeowners and provide guided tours of the home and show its progress to date. The turn-of-the-century shotgun home was equipped with universal design components such as a no-step entrance, wider doorways, ADA-compliant grab bars, raised countertops, comfort-height toilets, Energy Star appliances and other energy-efficient features.
