Watts has announced the grand prize winner of its 150th Anniversary Sweepstakes: Dave Plasschaert, an engineer from the Chicago area. Dave has won an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Boston, MA.

Terracon, a national consulting engineering firm comprised of engineers and professionals in a variety of related disciplines, has named Linda Yang, P.G., as director of growth for environmental services. 

Installing underground plumbing requires removing existing materials to place the piping system. However, this effort moves the designer/engineer into territory not typically part of their knowledge base: “Backfill and Bedding.” Additionally, the requirements will likely differ depending on the interior, exterior, or public right-of-way location. Code sections, rules, and engineering standards will likely address each area. 

The shift to water-saving plumbing fixtures has increased drainpipe corrosion and blockages, especially in cast iron and copper pipes. While regulations like the 1994 Energy Policy Act promote water conservation, they also lead to solids buildup, compromising pipe integrity and highlighting the need for effective plumbing maintenance.

Michael Galway, PE, LEED AP, CPD, is well-respected by his peers for his expertise, attention to detail, calming professional demeanor, and the fact that he’s not afraid to get out into the field and get his hands dirty, which is why he has been selected as Plumbing & Mechanical’s 2024 Mechanical Engineer of the Year.

On May 8th, I presented at the LADWP La Kretz Innovation Center for the ASPE LA Chapter on California’s adoption of the Water Demand Calculator. I spoke about the intersection of water and energy, emphasizing their crucial link in modern civilization.
